Hi all, firstly anyone that knows me will know that I am a total DanFan when it comes to Mr.Abnetts work, as far as I am concerned he can do no wrong…
After buying the hardback version of the book a few months ago (pretty much as soon as it hit the shelf!), I have been kind of putting off this reading this book and treating a little like pleasure delaying tactics, as I knew it was going to be a real treat, so I intentionally worked my way around some other black library novels first. Now, I know that I have mentioned that I don’t like the Astartes novels that I have read so far, but I didn’t notice this one.
Admittedly, Dan Abnett is my favorite author from the Black Library stables, but I hadn’t realised that this title was out there.
I opened my copy and pretty much straight away felt comfortable and surrounded by the story I was reading. To give a brief overview, this book is put together as a series of short stories following a squad of Astartes and their various undertakings. Continue reading

This collected edition of the works ‘Grey Knights’, ‘Dark Adeptus’ and ‘Hammer of Daemons’ is an imposing read at nearly 800 pages.
As already mentioned, I am not a massive fan of Astartes based novels, but I like the Inquisition novels as it gives a rare insight into the rest of the Imperium and its workings. Continue reading

This section will try and deliver some reviews/comments about the wealth of Black Library novels that are available and I have read(obviously!).
I love these books and I know that they fall short of some literary classics, they nevertheless are a fantastic read and are very, very well written.
Some favourites include, in no particular order - Dan Abnett, James Swallow, Steve Parker, Graham McNeill and lately, Henry Zou.
Am not a huge fan of Astartes based novels, but I think that is something that as yet, either I have not found the right one to read or no one has delivered a believable/empathic rendition of an Astartes.
The first novels I read were a number of years ago, pre-Black Library when GW released them under their flag. I suspect it was most likely the Inquisitor novel, but not 100% sure about that. After a loooong break from the hobby, I picked up a copy of Flight of the Eisenstein, part of the fabulous Horus Heresy series and was instantly hooked again.
