Brothers of the Snake – Dan Abnett

Now, I know that I have mentioned that I don’t like the Astartes novels that I have read so far, but I didn’t notice this one.

Admittedly, Dan Abnett is my favorite author from the Black Library stables, but I hadn’t realised that this title was out there.

I opened my copy and pretty much straight away felt comfortable and surrounded by the story I was reading. To give a brief overview, this book is put together as a series of short stories following a squad of Astartes and their various undertakings.  Continue reading

Thudd Gun 7

Hi all, construction went well last night and I got a few things progressed.

First amongst them was the barrels. I glued all of the tubing together and tried my best to line them all up and make sure they were the same lengths. Easier said than done sometimes as the fit is real tight and CA goes off really quickly! So fine adjustment once the glue is on there is a little tricky! Continue reading

Thudd Gun 6

Hi all, spent a few hours last night cutting the parts needed for the cannon bodies. I used the prototype as a template and still managed to get a few eroneous cuts in there!

Thudd Gun 5 – the crew

So my order of the Perry miniatures Napoleonic troops turned up over the weekend (thanks eBay!), and I am very pleased with them. They are a very nice boxed set and the mini’s are very well sculpted as you would expect from the Perry twins.

Thudd Gun 4

Hi all, have made some progress on the wheels. I wanted to put some hex bolts on there but I don’t have any stock for that only have some really large tank sized bits, so for the next lot, I may have to purchase some.

Thudd Gun 3

So, made some progress on the wheels last night.

I drilled out the holes, I feel they are a little too small, but they will be fine I think, I am not going back to the beginning at this stage. I used my leather punch tool to make some smaller disks for the hub, and used my circle template and pin method for the larger circle. Continue reading

Thudd Gun 2

Hi all, got the wheels started last night. Have used some electrical trunking tube that I had for another project for the wheels. Cut myself 2 sections from it and cleaned up using wet and dry paper. I still have issues cutting straight lines even using a mitre. Continue reading

Thudd Gun 1

So, as I mentioned in the Ideas post, I will scratch building a thudd gun or Imperial Quad Launcher to give its official name. I have been a dabler in using google sketchup for a while now, so when I have some spare time on my hands, I like to try and figure it out!

With this competition coming up, I thought that I would build a thdd gun in sketchup with a view to working out what I need to build it in the real world. Has really helped me figure it all out. I know it’s not the most complex build in the world, but gave me something to focus on for learning to use sketchup.

As you can see, a fun tool to use when it renders out using the sketchy style! Really like it!

So, I will press on with making the thudd gun this evening and I have already ordered my minis from the perry twins, so they should be on their way!

Thunder Child pt.10

OK, so I was wrong. I haven’t lost any impetus on this project as for some reason, I sat down last night and rebuilt the roof sections and I have to say, I am happy with it!

I think that at certain stages in models, it’s fair to say that I get a little jaded with them and other models inspire me. Kind of a way to offset the frustration i guess by looking at something else to take your mind off it.

Anyway, I will of course post some pics as soon as I get back this evening.

Finally got some pics sorted!

Needs a little tidy up, but is better than the first effort!

Ideas

So, the guys over at Work in Progress are having a new competition for the summer and I have decided to enter something of my own.

My initial thoughts were a jumbled mess of massive artillery pieces on Baneblade hulls, or a 40k Bertha style gun on a track or even some Xeno artillery. Thought about the Tau and what they would use for heavy emplacements, thought about how a Tyrannid version would work and even considered the ork approach. Continue reading
